Blog Post 18 - Stage 1 - Completed Design: Spine - Background

My finished design for Stage One: DVD Amaray Case Wrap
Having completed the discussion and explanation of the front cover, this next stage is in regards to the Spine of the DVD Cover. In comparison to the Front Cover, the spine has much less content however I will still discuss these elements in full detail. For reference, my finished design is posted here. In regards to the different elements of the Spine, these include the following which will be discussed and explained: Background; Title; Logos. Therefore, the first element that I will discuss is that of the Background.

Background
The first stage of the Spine area of the Case Wrap was to decide on what the background was going to be, and also how it was going to link in with the rest of the case. At the early stage of starting the Spine, I was undecided whether or not for the Spine to feature part of a photograph, continuation of the front cover background or a plain background. I swiftly ruled out the idea of having a continuation of the front cover background due to a couple of reasons which included that I was really happy with the placement of the background, and I also had another idea for the rear cover which would be linked into the front cover being where it is. With this ruled out, I decided to have a look back to my Blog Post 6 for the DVD Cover Research and spotted that each of the previous Ashes to Ashes DVD Case Covers did not feature a photograph on the spine, however they did feature a plain coloured background whereas the other objects such as logos and text were overlaid. With this in mind and that I thought it would also look the best, I decided to go ahead with a plain coloured background.

Layer Groups for ease of use
To begin with, I decided to create a new Layer Group called Spine, as to keep all the layers in a logical order whereby I could find them again in the future if needed. Once this was completed, in the toolbox I selected to use the Rectangle Tool which would allow me to draw a rectangular shape to the size that I wanted to. It was at this point that I was very thankful for the printing guide lines that I had previously set out for the safety and bleed areas, and by using these I was then able to draw the rectangle to the size that was necessary. Regarding colour, I opted for a grey colour which I thought worked well. To get an equal shade I decided to set the Hex colouring to that of 183 for Red, Green and Blue. All in all this created a shade of grey that I thought worked well with the rest of the cover, and would also compliment the other elements that I would be putting on the spine as well, which is also very important.

The background for the spine in place
With the background for the spine now in place, the next stage is in regards to the Title that will be featuring on the spine.
